Where does the money come from?
Washington Township teaches about 7,200 students in Gloucester County on a 2026-2027 operating budget of $166,574,956. Unlike New Jersey's wealthiest districts it qualifies for equalisation aid, the part of the state formula that fills the gap between what a district needs and what its community can reasonably pay. That aid is $30,103,160 of a $46,170,385 total, so roughly 28 cents of every dollar comes from the state and about 67 cents from the local levy of $111,661,654. A $7.5 million draw on fund balance is a real warning sign for the following year, but it is also a deliberate choice to hold the levy increase to 6.2 percent rather than pass the whole cost through in one year.

Energy savings plan, up to $8 million of conservation work
Ordinance introduced July 28, 2026; public hearing and final passage set for August 25, 2026The district is borrowing against verified future energy savings to pay for conservation measures in its buildings. Under New Jersey's Energy Savings Plan law the savings plus any rebates and grants must cover the cost, so the work is meant to pay for itself rather than being added to the tax levy.
