Board takes up building a new technical center

What happened

On June 1, 2026 the board took up 'New Technical Center in Rockingham County' as an action item. The build-up ran through the spring: a discussion of building materials for the future technical center on May 20, and a work session devoted to its design on May 26, held at the county's Research and Technology Park. An update came back to the board on Aug. 24, 2026. The county's own 2026-27 budget lists planning for a Rockingham Technical Center among its capital accomplishments.

Why it matters to families

Career and technical education for Rockingham County students currently runs mainly through Massanutten Technical Center, a centre shared with Harrisonburg City schools and governed by a joint board. A technical center of the county's own would be one of the largest buildings the division has taken on, and it would change where students go for trades, health and technology courses. The published record shows the project moving from discussion to a board vote and then to construction updates, but does not give a cost, a site or an opening date.
