An elected county Board of Education governs MCPS. The district adopted a $3.72 billion operating budget funded mainly by Montgomery County and Maryland.
Montgomery County provides $2.46 billion, up $118.7 million from FY2026 and $161.5 million above maintenance of effort.
Maryland provides $1.05 billion; federal revenue is $98.7 million, down $8.6 million.
The adopted plan is $61.0 million below the Board request and reduces the staffing plan by 415 positions.
MCPS is studying capacity, boundaries, school models, and possible consolidations as enrollment declines. No closure decision has been made through this study.
FY2027 operating budget and the adopted capital program
The approved six-year capital program totals $1.854 billion, about 67% of the $2.788 billion requested, and advances projects including Damascus High, Eastern Middle, and Sligo Middle.
