Five schools have to file absenteeism corrective plans

What happened

On July 15, 2026 the board approved chronic absenteeism corrective action plans for Winslow Township Schools 1, 2, 3 and 4 and for Winslow Township High School. Under New Jersey rules a school must produce one of these plans when more than 10 percent of its pupils are chronically absent, meaning they miss at least a tenth of the school year. Five of the district's nine schools were in that position. The board also set up a school-based student attendance and support team at the high school in August 2026.

Why it matters to families

Chronic absence is the strongest single predictor that a child will fall behind, and the state threshold is deliberately low: missing about eighteen days of a 180-day year is enough. Four of the five schools involved are elementary schools, where absence is usually a family logistics problem rather than a choice by the student, so the plans matter to parents directly. The plans themselves are not published with the agenda, so what each school intends to do is not on the public record here, and the district publishes no current chronic absenteeism rate.
