Community is being surveyed about renaming Cesar Chavez High School

What happened

The board began discussing a possible renaming of Cesar Chavez High School on July 21, 2026, after requests from the school community and residents during 'Conversations with the Superintendent'. The July agenda set out what Board Policy 7310 requires: a citizen advisory committee to review name suggestions and a public hearing before the board can adopt any new name, plus an estimate of what a change would cost. The August 25 agenda records that at the August 11 meeting the board decided to send a survey to students, staff and parents, and the board continued discussing that survey.

Why it matters to families

A school's name is on the diploma, the jerseys and the building, and renaming one is unusual enough that families will want to know it is being considered. The district's own policy gives the community a formal say through an advisory committee and a public hearing, and the survey is the first step in that.
