Board takes up adoption of the 2026-27 budget after a six-month process

What happened

The School Board put 'FY 2027 LCS Budget Adoption' on its consent agenda on June 16, 2026 as an action item. The process behind it started early: the board set an FY 2027 budget calendar in November 2025, held a work session and public hearing on the budget on Dec. 2, 2025, took the superintendent's proposed budget as an action item on Jan. 20, 2026, continued the discussion in February, and presented the plan to Lynchburg City Council at a joint meeting on April 14, 2026.

Why it matters to families

Lynchburg City Schools cannot raise its own money. It gets state aid, federal grants and a lump sum from Lynchburg City Council, which is why the board has to sell its plan to the city before the year starts. For scale, the previous year's adopted operating budget was $119.1 million, up 4.5% on the year before, with instruction alone at $83.3 million. The published record gives the FY 2027 timetable and votes but no dollar figures; the adopted FY 2027 document is not posted on the division's budget page.
