District proposes its first rules for AI in school

What happened

A new artificial intelligence policy, IJNDE, had its first reading on September 23, 2026. It would let teachers decide when students may use AI, require students to say when they used it and check that what it produced is true, and treat unapproved use as cheating. Staff and students could only use tools the district has approved, and no personal information about students could be typed into them.

Why it matters to families

Until now the only district rule mentioning AI was a single line in the Comprehensive Digital Use Agreement saying that passing off AI-generated work as your own is plagiarism. The draft policy also tells suppliers in writing that they may not use anything Duxbury types in to train their models. It is proposed, not adopted: a second reading is still to come.
