Budget grows 5%, but the county's share stays flat

What happened

The division's amended FY2026-2027 budget totals $143,754,757, up $7,142,439 or 5.23% from $136,612,318 the year before. Almost all of the increase comes from the state: Commonwealth funding rises $5,885,955 to $89,451,417, up 7.04%. The transfer from Bedford County stays at $34,003,378, exactly the same as the year before. Instruction spending rises 5.60% to $92,005,120, with special education up 10.94%, while technology falls 2.41%.

Why it matters to families

When state money grows and local money does not, the schools depend more on decisions made in Richmond than in Bedford. The state's own figures show the same pattern per student: the state share rises from $7,283 per student in 2024-25 to an estimated $8,483 in 2026-27, while the local share falls from $4,365 to an estimated $4,115. That makes the division more exposed if state funding ever slows down.
