Alameda Unified School District — Curriculum

Across the past year, Alameda Unified School District's curriculum decisions have spanned everything from early reading screening to high school textbooks and a proposed charter school restructure. The earliest development came when the Board voted 4-0 to approve Amira as the district's Early Reading Difficulties Screener for grades K-2, following a committee review process. That decision, recorded in the June 2025 minutes, establishes how early reading struggles will be identified at the elementary level.

In February 2026, Alameda Community Learning Center (ACLC) presented a material revision request to change from a 6-12 school to a 9-12 high school-only model starting next school year, citing the financial unsustainability of running two small middle school programs. This was informational only, with the Board scheduled to vote on the request in March 2026.

Then, in May 2026, the Board took up two secondary and elementary curriculum items at the same meeting. A public commenter asked to pull the Elementary ELA Curriculum Adoption from the Consent Calendar and delay it pending additional state-approved materials, but the item was not pulled and was approved as part of the consent calendar. The same agenda included consent-calendar approval of a new high school Biology textbook, "Understanding for Life," giving families a full picture of upcoming instructional materials in both language arts and science.
